King Governor Rod Blagojevich is trying to get two political heavyweights, Glen Poshard and former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert to convince the General Assembly that he can be trusted. Crain's Chicago Business is apparently buying into this bamboozle, too with their headline "Blagojevich moves to break budget logjam." But then they go on to say that King Rod himself never bothered to actually sign the memo that outlines the capital spending plan.
Folks, stop and consider - NOBODY from EITHER the Democrats OR the Republicans trust that King Rod will spend these billions of dollars wisely, as intended, or frankly, without personal gain to him or his cronies and supporters. Downstaters, who desperately need work on their roads, bridges, sewers, water supplies, and drainage systems should be equally leery of any plan that puts that much money into King Rod's control.
And this part of the memo is supposed to reassure us?
"Finally, it cannot be ignored that if the General Assembly believes the capital program has not been implemented as expected or executed in good faith, then it is within the General Assembly’s power to refuse to re-appropriate authority for spending in future fiscal years."
Sorry Denny, sorry Glen - but once the barn door has been opened, the cash blown on King Rod's pet Chicagoland projects and his friends fattened up even more, it is entirely too late. The money will be gone - and 99 of the 102 counties in Illinois still screwed over.
