Homeland Security - Tooting a Sour Horn
The Department of Homeland Security (YAWOHL!) has recently announced a huge blow on to the drug cartels. Read my sarcasm into that sentence - they are all excited because they seized $3.2 million in cash over a three week time span.
Now, this might make some sense in a world where that represented any significant portion of the total. But we're talking about a criminally-operated industry with profits estimated to be in the $40-60 BILLION range annually - this amounts to .008% of the total profits - or what the drug cartels are making every 7 hours.
Does this make any sense to anyone?
What if these drugs were being legally imported, and taxed, instead? Where is the sanity in making posession of such a readily available commodity as marijuana or cocaine a felony offense - when what should be illegal is selling UNTAXED substances.
The United States went through the nightmare of Prohibition, when another such intoxicant was illegal - and hence the only suppliers became criminals - dangerous, violent criminals. Murder Inc existed - where competitors were not driven from the marketplace by bungled marketing tactics, but with bullets, knives, and explosives.
Sound familiar to today's situation?
